Mmmmmmmm, red tuna, so good

You probably like eating tuna, red tuna, right ? Soon this fish will disappear of the Atlantic ocean because we eat it too much. Red tunas are not "artificially cultivated" in pools. They just live in the ocean. The yearly fishing quotas are 2 times too high to preserve this specie : 30 000 tons a year instead of 15 000 to keep the fish alive. Just because the demand is around 30 000 tons a year. We all can decide now of the future of the red tuna : better to see red tuna in the ocean for centuries or in our plate for a decade ? I already chose.

Vous aimez certainement le ton, le ton rouge, pas vrai ? Bientôt ce poisson va disparaitre de l'océan Atlantique parce qu'on en mange trop. Le thon rouge n'est pas un poisson d'élevage. Il vit naturellment dans l'océan. Les quotas de pêche annuels sont 2 fois trop élevés pour préserver l'espèce : 30 000 tonnes contre 15 000 pour sauver le thon rouge. Simplement parce que la demande annuelle est de 30 000 tonnes. C'est à chacun d'entre nous de décider de l'avenir du thon rouge : vous préférez le voir dans l'océan pendant des siècles ou dans vous assiette pour une décennie ? J'ai choisi.

Orlando : 1987 world championship + Hydrogen buses.

Another personal story : in 1987 I raced the BMX world championship in Orlando, FL, USA. At that time, I did not care of the Earth protection, just like most of us (if you were born already). Nowadays, I do care about Earth protection and the city of Orlando too. In may 2007, the first hydrogen fuelling station opened in that sunny city. And a whole fleet of Ford hydrogen buses had been bought by the city. If I were in Orlando, I would be proud of catching such a bus.

Une autre histoire personnelle : en 1987, je participais aux championnats du monde de BMX à Orlando en Floride (USA). A cette époque, peu m'importait la protection de l'environnement comme bon nombre d'entre nous (si vous étiez déjà nés). Désormais, je suis concerné par l'écologie tout comme la ville d'Orlando. En mai dernier, la première station service à hydrogène s'est ouverte dans cette ville ensoleillée. Une flotte complète de bus à hydrogène Ford a été achetée par la municipalité. Si j'étais sur Orlando, je ne serai pas peu fier de prendre un tel bus.

Self-criticism

I am the most polluting person I've ever met. I don't need to look at other people to see the world pollution. During this Taiwan trip, I can see the amount of pollution I generate. I don't even talk of the CO2 from the plane. I talk about these pictures : wastes of the painting factory and useless overquantities of frame stickers. I am responsible of that trash. Minimum quantites required by the sticker printer are around 2000 pieces per frame while we only sell 80 St-Martin Happy Place frames a year...
At Superstar and St-Martin, we just started our self-criticism about pollution. It will be hard to reach the zero-pollution status of course. We'll feel happy after each step forward. Who knows : 2009 frames might come paintless and sticker free ?

Je suis le plus grand pollueur que je connaisse. Pas la peine de regarder les autres pour voir la pollution mondiale. Pendant ce voyage à Taiwan, je vois toute la pollution que je génère. Je ne parle même pas du CO2 de l'avion. Je parle de ces photos : déchets de l'usine de peinture et surproduction d'autocollants de cadres. Je suis responsable de tout cela. Les quantités minimales requises par l'imprimeur tournent autour de 2000 pièces quand bien même nous ne vendons que 80 cadres St-Martin Happy Place par an...
Chez Superstar et St-Martin, nous avons commencé notre auto-critique environnementale. Pas simple d'atteindre le zéro-pollution. Chaque étape franchie nous rendra meilleurs. Qui sait : des cadres 2009 sans peinture ni stickers ?

Taiwan rules and moves, part 1.

I am in Taiwan again (new 2008 stuff control) and I noticed two interesting points about the country. First was the earthquake 4 days ago. A small one, but big enough to remind me that we just are nothing on Earth. When an earthquake happens, nothing can stop it and we just have to wait until it stops. Je suis à Taiwan une fois de plus (contrôle de la production 2008). J'ai noté 2 points intéressants au sujet du pays. Déjà, le tremblement de terre d'il y a 4 jours. Un petit, mais suffisamment gros pour me rappeler qu'on n'est rien sur Terre. Rien n'arrête un tremblement de terre. Il faut juste attendre. Arrêtons de croire qu'on se situe au dessus de la Nature. C'est elle la plus forte. Voyez la photo du dernier gros tremblement de terre à Chi-Chi, Taiwan le 20 septembre 1999.

Taiwan rules and moves, part 2.

I already told you about recycling bins for free newspapers in the Taipei metro (posted on 07/0707). Taipei MRT made a great improvement of their re-use system. They changed the traditionnal one-use ticket by a forever-reusable blue coin. That's great. If all worldwide metros were doing the same, tons of paper and tons of waste could be saved. Only in Paris, around 450 millions tickets are used per year. Average lifetime : 15 minutes... Reducing waste is simply better for everyone.

Je vous ai déjà parlé du recyclage des journaux gratuits du métro de Taipei (posté le 07/07/07). Le MRT de Taipei s'en encore amélioré au niveau environnemental. Ils ont remplacer le tradtionnel ticket à usage unique par un jeton réutilisable à l'infini. Parfait. Si tous les métros du monde faisaient de même, imaginez l'économie de papier et la réduction des déchets. Rien qu'à Paris, 450 millions de ticket par an. Durée de vie 15 minutes. On a tous à gagner en réduisant nos déchêts.
