Global warming / Global warning, part 2

I love this sequence from "The Matrix". Watch from 0' to 1'17". Agent Smith (not a real human) studied human beings and his conclusion is close to be true : humans don't behave as other mammals. No equilibrium with Nature. We act like a virus : once we devastated an area, we move somewhere else to devastate again. However, we already moved almost everywhere on the planet.
In Global warming / Global warning, part 1, I wrote "Selfishness is king". After what we just saw during the Copenhagen climate conference, I repeat it again : Selfishness is king, we just got the proof.

J'aime cette séquence de "The Matrix". Regardez de 0' à 1'17" (désolé c'est en anglais). L'agent Smith (pas un vrai humain) a étudié le genre humain et sa conclusion s'approche de la vérité : les hommes ne se comportent pas comme les autres mammifères. Pas d'équilibre avec la Nature. Nous agissons comme un virus : après avoir tout dévasté quelque part, nous nous déplaçons vers un autre endroit pour recommencer. Cependant, nous nous sommes déjà déplacés quasi partout sur la planète.
Dans Global warming / Global warning, part 1, j'avais écrit " L'égoïsme règne en maître". Après ce que nous venons de voir au sommet sur le climat de Copenhague, je peux le répéter : L'égoïsme règne en maître, nous venons d'en avoir la preuve.

Lately I had a chat about energy resources with a good friend, pictured here. He said something I really liked : "The best energy is mainly the energy we don't use". Don't see here a return ten centuries back. Just use what we really need. Thanks Zbb.

Dernièrement, je discutais des ressources énergétiques avec un bon ami en photo ici. Il a dit quelque chose que j'aime vraiment : "La meilleure energie est surtout celle que l'on ne consomme pas". N'y voyez pas un retour dix siècles en arrière. Simplement utiliser ce dont on a réellement besoin. Merci Zbb.

Global warming / Global warning, part 1

A friend of mine belongs to the "Global warning does not exist" group. Why not... Everyone is free to see the world with his/her own eyes. However, there is something "funny" lately on Earth. This global warming thing is a kind of test for human behaviour. Finally, facing a global problem (not "just" a geo-political problem), we are unable to band together. Some think it is urgent to act, some already act for years, some think it is the biggest joke ever, some start the climategate, some see the money global warming can bring them...
We don't have a common vision of the situation. Selfishness is king.
Remember one thing : we need the Earth to live. Earth does not need humans.

Un ami appartient au groupe des gens qui ne croient pas au réchauffement climatique. Pourquoi pas... Libre à lui de voir le monde avec ses yeux. Cependant, il y a quelque chose d'amusant actuellement sur Terre. Ce truc du global warming est une sorte de test pour le comportement humain. Face à ce problème global (pas "juste" un problème géo-politique), nous sommes incapables d'avancer dans la même direction. Certains pensent qu'il est urgent d'agir, certains agissent déjà depuis longtemps, certains pensent qu'il s'agit de la plus grosse blague jamais sortie, certains lance le climategate, certains voient l'argent que le réchauffement climatique peut leur rapporter...
Nous n'avons pas de vision commune. L'égoïsme règne en maître.
Rappele-ons une chose : nous avons besoin de la Terre pour vivre. La Terre n'a pas besoin des humains.

Formula One racing : old school sport ?

Bridgestone and Toyota announced this week the end of their F1 support. Bad news or good news ? F1 fans always say that Formula One is a laboratory for our future cars. Partly true. However, I see more hybrid cars in the real life than on a Formula One racefield. Common cars are ahead of F1 cars in term of modernity.
Bridgestone produced 40 000 tires for the 2009 Formula One season. 40 000 tires / 20 cars = 2000 tires per car. Ok, I know, their are more than 20 F1 driving. Anyway, isn't it too much ?

Bridgestone et Toyota ont annoncé cette semaine leur retrait de la F1. Mauvaise ou bonne nouvelle ? Les fans de F1 disent toujours que la F1 est le laboratoire de nos futures autos. Vrai en partie. Cependant, je vois plus de voitures hybrides dans la vraie vie que sur un circuit automobile. Les voitures banales sont en avance sur les F1 en term de modernité.

The floor pump dilemma

After 5 years of intensive service, the head of my Pedro's floor pump is really out of order. I already fixed two times. Now, this is it. I am facing a problem, what is less polluting :

- buying a new complete pump here in Andorra ?
- buying a new pump head at a famous british mailorder ?
I don't need a complete pump. I just need a head. On the other hand, I prefer buying locally (even if the pump is not produced locally) than to an overseas website which will have to send the head by post. What would you do ?
As usual anything we do generates pollution.

Finally, I bought a complete SKS pump in Andorra. Later, I'll try to find a head for the Pedro's and I'll give it to someone. I don't know if I did the right choice, environmentally speaking...

Après 5 ans de service intensif, la tête de ma pompe à pied Pedro's est désormais hors service. Je l'avais réparée par 2 fois, déjà. Là, c'est fini. Je fais donc face à un dilème, qu'est-ce qui pollue le moins :
- acheter une pompe neuve ici en Andorre ?
- acheter une tête de pompe chez un fameux VPCiste britanique ?
Je n'ai pas besoin d'une pompe complète. Je n'ai besoin que d'une tête. D'un autre coté, je préfère acheter localement (même si la pompe n'est pas produite localement) que chez un vendeur loin de chez moi qui devra poster la tête de pompe. Que feriez-vous ?
Comme toujours, chaque chose que nous faisons génère de la pollution.

Finalement, j'ai acheté une pompe complète SKS en Andorre. Plus tard, j'essayerai de trouver une tête pour la Pedro's et je la donnerai à quelqu'un. Je ne sais pas si j'ai fait le bon choix écologiquement parlant...
